Claude gets in-country AI processing for regulated organisations in India

Anthropic has made Claude available with in-country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock. Organisations using the India endpoint can now have their prompts and Claude’s responses processed on servers located within India.

The change is aimed particularly at banks, government organisations and large businesses that have been reluctant to move sensitive AI workloads into production because of data-residency requirements. Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are available through the service, alongside audit trails and access controls intended for enterprise governance.

Key facts

  • Claude requests using the India endpoint can be processed within India.
  • Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are supported.
  • The service is delivered through Amazon Bedrock.
  • It is aimed particularly at regulated and data-sensitive organisations.
  • Deployments include audit trails and access controls.
  • Indian banks, technology companies and major enterprises are already using Claude in production environments.

Our take

This is relevant well beyond India. Data residency is becoming an important factor in whether organisations move AI from experiments into sensitive production systems.

New Zealand organisations handling health, government, financial, legal or other sensitive information face similar questions. As AI providers build more regional infrastructure, organisations may increasingly be able to choose not only which model they use, but also where inference happens and what jurisdiction their information enters.
