SeaLegs AI brings AI-powered marine forecasting across New Zealand

SeaLegs AI has expanded its AI-powered marine forecasting service across New Zealand, covering areas from the Far North to Fiordland and the Chatham Islands. Instead of requiring boaties to interpret several weather datasets themselves, the service turns them into vessel-specific Go, Caution or No-Go guidance.

The platform combines established weather models with information about wind, gusts, swell, wave periods, visibility and forecast confidence. It also provides route forecasting and fishing intelligence based on ocean conditions. Boating New Zealand

Key facts

  • Coverage now extends across New Zealand.
  • Guidance can be tailored to powerboats, yachts, catamarans, sport-fishing boats and kayaks.
  • TripCast provides route-specific forecasts and safety assessments.
  • SpotCast provides multi-day forecasts for individual locations.
  • DeepCast analyses ocean conditions to identify potentially productive fishing areas.
  • The service is available through mobile apps and the web.

Our take

This is a good example of AI being useful without needing to look particularly futuristic. The underlying information already exists, but interpreting several forecasts and applying them to a particular vessel can require experience.

AI’s role here is largely to turn complex data into a practical recommendation. That pattern has much wider potential in New Zealand, particularly in agriculture, logistics, infrastructure and other sectors where people regularly make decisions using several changing data sources.
