University of Auckland launches human-centred AI initiative

The University of Auckland Business School has launched Huanui: The AI Initiative, a new hub focused on using AI in ways that strengthen human judgement rather than displace it.

Huanui will combine research, education and practical engagement with business, government and communities. Its focus is not simply adopting the latest AI tools, but developing the skills, governance and organisational practices needed to use them responsibly and effectively.

Key facts

  • Huanui is led by Professor Alexander Richter, Professor of Human-Centric AI.
  • The initiative will establish an AI think tank connecting researchers, businesses, government and communities.
  • AI executives in residence will bring practical experience into the Business School.
  • Faculty champions and student AI partners will help build practical AI capability.
  • Research and engagement will incorporate mātauranga Māori and Indigenous perspectives.
  • Human expertise, judgement and accountability are central to the initiative.

Our take

This is a useful addition to New Zealand’s growing AI ecosystem because it focuses on the part of AI adoption that is often harder than selecting the technology: how people actually work with it.

For organisations, the important principle is that human oversight should involve more than approving an AI-generated answer. People need enough knowledge, evidence and authority to challenge the system when it gets something wrong. Huanui’s combination of research, business engagement and practical capability-building could help turn that principle into workable approaches for New Zealand organisations.
