Google introduces labels for AI-generated advertising

Google has introduced new disclosure tools to help people identify advertisements created or edited using generative AI.

The information will appear in a new “How this ad was made” section within My Ad Center across Google Search, YouTube and Discover. Advertisers will also be able to identify content made using AI tools outside Google.

Key facts

  • Google will automatically disclose ads created using its own generative AI tools.
  • Advertisers can manually label content produced or altered using other AI services.
  • The disclosure can be viewed through the three-dot menu or information icon on an advertisement.
  • Some advertisements may also display a label directly, depending on local requirements.
  • The labelling controls are being introduced progressively across Google’s advertising platforms.

Our take

Clearer disclosure will help people better understand when the advertising they see has been created or altered using AI. The approach also provides businesses with a relatively simple way to demonstrate transparency. Organisations using generative AI for marketing should retain records of how content was produced and consider disclosure even where it is not yet legally required.
